Closed Hand/Open Hand

The "closed hand" holds those doctrines I believe to be essential in order to be saved.
The "open hand" holds everything else.
What is in your "closed hand?"

  • believe - confess the Lord Jesus with thy mouth
  • repent - be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins
  • walk with Him in newness of life

Romans 6

...unto Caesar

“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21 NIV)
This scripture is often quoted incomplete. -In an attempt to set Christ up to be turned over to Pilate the Pharisees asked if it were lawful for a Jew to pay tax to Caesar. Prior to the above quote the Lord asked to see a coin suitable for paying the tax. The coin of that time had an image of Caesar and was in-scripted much as our own "In God We Trust" however, that coin claimed Caesar's father Augustus to be a god. The question was a trap and Christ knew it hence His intentionally ambiguous response.


The scripture states -Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
(2 Timothy 2:15 New American Standard). The scripture throughout the ages has been interpreted to justify individual agendas. It is our calling to study it with an open heart and mind. To learn about the audience and cultures of the time in which any scripture was written about.


Should we pay taxes? of course -See Romans 13:1-7. I firmly believe in the taxation of the people in order to fund the running of our Government... not for the funding of charity.
We are to obey the law of the land for there is no authority that God did not establish. Unless a law is created that is against the Laws of God then I must obey. However, I don't feel the Government should be footing the bill to care for
"the least of these."
It is the government's job to provide infrastructure such as roads. It is the government's job to make money and establish laws for trade so that our economy can flourish. (expounding on that to the simplest 6 functions - to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.)


I look at the Social Security program and feel it is a dismal failure. I do not feel that money I have paid in to it -required of me to do so- will be there when I need it. Personally, it is not my belief that I should be putting my trust in a Program for my security... That trust and faith for my security I give to the Lord. I set aside funds for my future doing my best to be a good steward of what I have been blessed with.


I believe an omniscient God quite possibly called upon believers to minister to "the least of these" for more than loving your neighbor as yourself. Being all knowing has the vantage point of seeing what leaving charity (ministering and caring by what means necessary, be it clothe them, feed them, care for them if they are sick, give them shelter when homeless etc) up to the government will turn into. The taxing of the people to fund such charity by the government IMHO -is forced "giving" and leaves it in the hands of an entity that I sincerely doubt the Constitution intended. While "Promoting the General Welfare" of the people is a multitudinous role and of course is open for members of said Government to interpret and adapt as they see fit... I'd much quicker see the FDA or FEMA as acceptable forms of promoting our general welfare than a tax to fund a program for my future security.


Of course there are men (and women) in religious positions that take advantage. To whom much is given much is required. While we are all going to be held accountable for what we know - a "Man of God" Shepherd, Minister etc... will be held accountable for their mishandling of the position while in charge of the flock and/or in service to the Lord.
In my humble opinion, stepping up and being more than-
"faithful tither-what God requires" and bringing-
"offerings -freely given for the work of God"
and remembering there is also the giving of-
"ALMS-Money, goods purchased or time offered that you decide to give to help the poor and needy" .............To love thy neighbor, is not just a feel good thing but just happens to be a biblical principal that could bring unity to our Nation regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or political/spiritual beliefs.


-and hey, for those outside of Christianity or any other spiritual beliefs we could go with the positive side of the theory of reciprocity- responding to a positive action with another positive action. If you're not fond of theories call it establishing and cultivating an altruistic care and concern for your countrymen!


-Then the Government can go about doing what it should be doing.


lastly- .... a wise woman said to my son "there are 3 uses for money young man -spend some, save some, give some away" rather simplistic but one supports the economy, one saves for your security and one is a charitable act.

Our Nation

The welfare of our fellow man is being taken "care of" by the government. Perchance the state of this Nation is due to the complacency of the very people who are called to do these things below.
King James Version Matthew 25: 41-46
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

Human nature- we tend to surround ourselves with like people. Those that are doing their part in helping the homeless, sick, etc... are "the Christians you know doing what they can" they are fellow believers in your circle be that church or any other Christian based organization intent on helping as the Lord called upon us to do. Does that mean the population on whole of people professing some form of Christian faith are doing their part? I've seen the percentage of professed Christians in the US in the low 70's percent and as high in the upper 80's percent.


The Consensus Bureau says the US population as of 2009 is 307,006,550.


70% of that is 214,904,585 as a low number.
89% of that is 273,235,829 as a high number.



HUD's Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress states the following-
"About 1.6 million people were homeless in emergency shelters or transitional housing at some point during the year between October 1, 2007 and September 30, 2008. The nation’s sheltered homeless population over a year’s time included approximately 1,092,600 individuals (68 percent) and 516,700 persons in families (32 percent). A family is a household that includes an adult 18 years of age or older and at least one child. All other sheltered homeless people are considered individuals." -this was the most current report I could find. Likely higher numbers given the state of our economy.


As I previously stated - Perchance the state of this Nation is due to the complacency of the very people who are called to do these things below (see above scripture.) I have the bigger picture of the population of professing Christians on whole... not any one Christian.


1.6 million homeless vs even the lower number of 214,604,585 Christians. I don't see that as putting the blame where it is most convenient. I see that as putting the responsibility where Christ said it belongs. Not the Government. Yes, there are real places in community that the Government belongs. However, IMHO if even half of the lower number of professing Christians were ministering to the needs of our Nation... think of how the Lord could bless their giving (not just monetary giving) and multiply it. That is a basic Biblical principal. Sewing a seed. Reaping a harvest. Whether that seed is money or time or prayers.


Imagine the freed up money the Government spends on welfare in all of it's applications - be that an access card to cash assistance from Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LI-HEAP). Just imagine our Education System, Strengthening our Military, Research for HIV, Cancer... the list in magnificent... and yes... money to help other countries. I firmly believe if we help our Country we are better able to be in a position to help other countries. And we should because then ... that is the Lord's words in Matthew 25 on a grand scale.


I realize the homeless is not the biggest or only problem. I adduce any professing Christian would adhere to Christs words in Matthew 25 regardless of the translation.


I believe our Nation is Great... but to whom much is given much is required. We have been blessed.... beyond measure. We are by far and large faring better than oh so many in the world. Charity to our home, Our Nation is deeply needed.

Hello all!

I've been wanting to blog for some time but thought - I don't wish to blog about ... well just anything.  Then it occured to me, yes... yes I do want to blog about just anything!  Whatever comes to my mind to ponder on and share.  So this is it - The first of the "World according to Bren."

It may at times be mundane or quite likely controversial.  For sure it will always be the workings of an extremely active mind/imagination. (I've got ADD so at times the focus may be all over the place depending on the time of the post and if the meds are no longer in my system)
